Chapter 7
The foursome settled in front of an old James Bond movie with a bowl of microwave popcorn. As the action began, Edward chuckled.
âWhat is it?â Janet asked.
âI just find these movies entertaining,â he told her in a whisper. âThey get a great deal wrong, of course.â
âReally? Tell me more.â
Edward shook his head. âNot now. Joan and Michael are trying to enjoy the film. Weâll talk more about my past another time.â
Janet wanted to object, but Joan caught her eye and frowned at her. Janet grabbed a handful of popcorn and settled back to enjoy the film. Edward slid an arm around her, and once sheâd finished eating, she rested her head on his shoulder. It felt oddly right and comfortable. When the movie was over, everyone headed to bed.
âBreakfast at eight,â Janet reminded Edward on the landing outside of their rooms.
âIâll see you then, darling,â he replied, pulling her into a kiss.
Janet knew she was grinning hugely as she let herself into her room. âHeâs wonderful,â she told Aggie.
âMeeoww,â Aggie replied.
Curled up under her duvet, Janet began to wonder about the dead man whoâd been found in the carriage house. Was it actually one of Maggie Appletonâs former boyfriends or was it more complicated than that? And was the dead man the ghost whoâd been haunting the carriage house? The ghost had been absent since the police arrived, or, at least, Janet hadnât heard anyone complaining about the lights going out or the door shutting on its own. Was it possible that removing the body had allowed the ghost to rest in peace?
âYouâll be a good deal happier once weâve identified you,â Janet whispered. âAnd once your killer is behind bars, as well.â
âMeww,â Aggie told her.
The next thing Janet knew, her alarm was ringing. She switched it off and sighed. It hadnât taken long for her body to adapt to having breakfast somewhat later than she had been having it. When sheâd risen at six every day, sheâd always thought that another hour of sleep would have made a world of difference, but now that she rose at seven each morning, she still felt tired and in need of coffee when the alarm rang.
Joan was alone in the kitchen, which was unusual these days.
âGood morning,â Janet said, grabbing the loaf of bread to start making toast.
âGood morning,â Joan replied. âHow are you this morning?â
âFine, and you?â
âIâm fine. You seem quite happy to have Edward here.â
âI am, although itâs odd, too. Weâve talked a great deal over the phone recently and Iâm starting to feel as if Iâm getting to know him, but then I find out that heâs friends with the head of Derby CID and I feel as if I know nothing about him.â
Joan nodded. âIf it makes you feel any better, I feel the same way about Michael sometimes and weâre married.â
âReally?â
âHe had an entire life before he met me. He was married and he had a business. I had an entire life before I met him, as well, with a career of my own.
